About Hawaii

Discovery: Hawaii was discovered in 1778 by Captain James Cook of the United Kingdom. which he promptly named the Sandwich Islands in honor of his sponsor the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Hawaii has been populated for at least 1,500 years prior to his arrival.
Native Peoples: Approximately 1,500 years ago, polynesians migrated to the Hawaii Islands and progressed from farming settlements into a complex society.
Population: Im 2000, Hawaii had a local population surpassing 1.2 million. Europeans, Chinese and Japanese, began populating the islands in the 18th and 19th centuries, often finding work as farmers, missionaries and tradesmen.
Languages: Hawaii has two official languages: Hawaiian and English. Japanese and Tagalog are also common.
